Verse 3 is found in chapter 19 of 1 Chronicles. Hanun humiliates David’s messengers, who had initially come with friendly intentions after Nahash’s death. The public shame of the messengers turns a diplomatic situation into military conflict. The episode shows how a hostile interpretation of a diplomatic action can trigger a war with major consequences.
