Verse 12 is found in chapter 24 of 1 Chronicles. The descendants of Aaron are organized into twenty-four priestly divisions by lot. The procedure distributes responsibilities in an orderly manner and prevents service from remaining indefinitely concentrated in one family. The system of rotations will be fundamental to the regular functioning of priestly worship.
