Verse 76 is found in chapter 6 of 1 Chronicles. The families of Gershon and Merari receive their respective cities. The conclusion of the chapter completes the territorial picture of the Levites and shows that the three branches of Levi had designated places within Israel. The Chronicler’s interest is in reconstructing a recognizable worship structure for a community that had experienced exile and the loss of the temple.
