Verse 8 is found in chapter 1 of 1 Kings. Adonijah, David’s son, attempts to proclaim himself king by taking advantage of his father’s weakness. He organizes chariots, horsemen, and an escort, and gains the support of Joab and the priest Abiathar. However, he deliberately excludes Solomon, Nathan, Zadok, and other servants of David. The scene presents a disputed political succession and shows Adonijah attempting to secure the throne through self-proclamation before receiving David’s formal designation.
