Verse 18 is found in chapter 11 of 1 Kings. God allows Hadad the Edomite to become an adversary of Solomon. His story connects the present with the earlier wars of David and Joab. Hadad seeks to return to Edom after having lived in Egypt and eventually opposes Solomon. The episode shows how external enemies can become instruments of the discipline announced against the kingdom.
