Of the nations concerning which the LORD said unto the children of Israel, Ye shall not go in to them, neither shall they come in unto you: for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods: Solomon clave unto these in love.

Verse 2 is found in chapter 11 of 1 Kings. Solomon loves many foreign women and eventually follows their gods. The text directly connects his marriages with the turning away of his heart. Unlike the request for wisdom in 3:9, the king’s heart is now no longer fully directed toward the Lord. Idolatry does not appear as a sudden change, but as the result of relationships and practices that progressively alter the ruler’s faithfulness.
