Verse 13 is found in chapter 12 of 1 Kings. Rehoboam rejects the elders’ advice and responds harshly to the people, announcing that he will increase the weight of the yoke. The narrator interprets the result as fulfillment of the word of the Lord announced by Ahijah. Rehoboam’s responsibility does not disappear because of divine providence: his concrete decision is the means through which the announced division occurs.
