And Jeroboam ordained a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, like unto the feast that is in Judah, and he offered upon the altar. So did he in Bethel, sacrificing unto the calves that he had made: and he placed in Bethel the priests of the high places which he had made.

Verse 32 is found in chapter 12 of 1 Kings. Jeroboam establishes Shechem and then creates worship centers at Bethel and Dan with golden calves. His reasoning is political: he fears that the people will return to Jerusalem and eventually recognize the house of David again. The decision deliberately alters the cultic system to preserve the new kingdom’s power. Jeroboam’s sin subsequently becomes the standard by which many kings of Israel are evaluated.
