In his days did Hiel the Bethelite build Jericho: he laid the foundation thereof in Abiram his firstborn, and set up the gates thereof in his youngest son Segub, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake by Joshua the son of Nun.

Verse 34 is found in chapter 16 of 1 Kings. Ahab begins to reign, and the narrator presents him as surpassing his predecessors in wickedness. His marriage to Jezebel and promotion of Baal worship make idolatry a central issue in the kingdom. The rebuilding of Jericho by Hiel is also connected with an ancient word of judgment. The chapter thus prepares the setting for Elijah’s ministry and the open conflict over who truly is God in Israel.
