And he said, I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hosts: for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.

Verse 10 is found in chapter 19 of 1 Kings. Elijah reaches Horeb and enters a cave. God asks him what he is doing there, and the prophet expresses his perception of abandonment and failure. The divine response begins with wind, earthquake, and fire, but the Lord is not simply identified with these phenomena; afterward comes a gentle sound, and Elijah hears the question again. The scene shifts expectations from spectacular manifestation toward a deeper experience of divine presence.
