So they girded sackcloth on their loins, and put ropes on their heads, and came to the king of Israel, and said, Thy servant Benhadad saith, I pray thee, let me live. And he said, Is he yet alive? he is my brother.

Verse 32 is found in chapter 20 of 1 Kings. The prophet warns Ahab that Ben-hadad will return the following year. The Syrians interpret their previous defeat as resulting from Israel having gods of the mountains but not of the plains, yet the Lord again grants Israel victory to demonstrate that his power is not geographically limited. Afterwards Ahab spares Ben-hadad and makes a covenant with him. The problem is that the king treats as an ally someone whom God had delivered to judgment.
