Verse 25 is found in chapter 9 of 1 Kings. Solomon organizes forced labor, fortifications, and commercial activities, including a maritime alliance with Hiram. Economic and architectural expansion reaches a massive scale. At the same time, the description of subjected workers anticipates one of the social causes that will later contribute to the division of the kingdom. Solomon’s material greatness therefore contains a tension between state prosperity and the burden imposed on the population.
