Verse 3 is found in chapter 9 of 1 Kings. God appears to Solomon again after the temple is completed and responds to his prayer. He confirms that he has consecrated the house to place his name there, but again links the dynasty’s permanence to obedience. If Israel abandons the Lord, the temple itself can become an object of astonishment and reproach. The central teaching is that Jerusalem’s election does not remove the conditions of the covenant.
