Saul chose him three thousand men of Israel; whereof two thousand were with Saul in Michmash and in mount Bethel, and a thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin: and the rest of the people he sent every man to his tent.

Verse 2 is found in chapter 13 of 1 Samuel. The conflict with the Philistines intensifies and Jonathan attacks a garrison, provoking a military response. The people begin hiding in fear of Philistine superiority. The narrative creates a setting in which trust in God will be tested. Saul gathers the people at Gilgal, but Samuel’s delay creates tension. The issue is not merely military: the king must demonstrate whether he recognizes that his authority is limited by prophetic instruction and by the commands he has received.
