Verse 22 is found in chapter 15 of 1 Samuel. Saul claims to have obeyed while Samuel confronts the discrepancy between his words and his actions. The famous contrast between obedience and sacrifice places listening to God above religious acts used to justify disobedience. Saul admits that he feared the people and listened to their voice, revealing a deep root of his failure: his authority is conditioned by human approval. Samuel declares that rebellion is like the sin of divination and that rejection of the divine word has consequences for the kingdom.
