Verse 11 is found in chapter 16 of 1 Samuel. David, the youngest son, is called from the field and anointed before his family. The Spirit of the Lord comes upon him from that moment. The selection occurs without a public national ceremony while Saul still occupies the throne. The anointing creates tension between divine choice and political reality: David has been appointed, but must live through a long process before exercising kingship. The narrative thus presents divine providence unfolding gradually amid apparently ordinary circumstances.
