Let our lord now command thy servants, which are before thee, to seek out a man, who is a cunning player on an harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well.

Verse 16 is found in chapter 16 of 1 Samuel. The Spirit of the Lord departs from Saul and a distressing spirit begins to trouble him. His servants seek music to relieve his condition, and David is brought to court to play the harp. Without Saul fully understanding it, the future king begins entering the environment of the current king. The passage creates a significant narrative transition: David is introduced as Saul’s servant before becoming his rival. Providence brings both characters together within a relationship that will become increasingly complex.
