Verse 1 is found in chapter 17 of 1 Samuel. Goliath’s challenge establishes a confrontation between the Philistine army and Israel. Goliath bases his challenge on his size, armor, and military experience, while the Israelites respond with fear. David has not yet appeared as a fighter, but the narrative prepares the contrast between trust in visible resources and trust in God. Saul, the king previously chosen for his imposing appearance, remains paralyzed before the Philistine warrior. The chapter therefore begins questioning what it truly means to be a courageous king.
