Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God.

Verse 36 is found in chapter 17 of 1 Samuel. Saul hears David and offers him his armor, but David chooses not to use it because he is not accustomed to it. He recalls defending his father’s sheep from the lion and the bear and attributes those experiences to the Lord. The scene connects his pastoral experience with his present confidence. David does not present himself as unprepared, but as someone whose preparation has been interpreted through dependence on God. Refusing Saul’s armor also anticipates the contrast between their forms of leadership.
