Verse 2 is found in chapter 20 of 1 Samuel. David explains to Jonathan that Saul is trying to kill him, while Jonathan initially finds it difficult to accept that his father could be acting with such intent. They establish a plan to discover Saul’s intentions through David’s absence from the New Moon meal. Their friendship is expressed through a covenant based on mutual faithfulness. Jonathan must choose between family loyalty and defending an innocent friend, preparing one of the deepest tests of his character.
