Verse 40 is found in chapter 20 of 1 Samuel. Jonathan communicates through the arrows that David must flee. They weep together and renew their covenant before separating. David is definitively outside the court and begins his period as a fugitive. The scene is one of the clearest expressions of covenant friendship in biblical narrative. Jonathan gains no political advantage by supporting David; instead, his loyalty costs him a rupture with his own father.
