And the men of David said unto him, Behold the day of which the LORD said unto thee, Behold, I will deliver thine enemy into thine hand, that thou mayest do to him as it shall seem good unto thee. Then David arose, and cut off the skirt of Saul's robe privily.

Verse 4 is found in chapter 24 of 1 Samuel. David finds himself in an unexpectedly favorable position when Saul enters the cave where he and his men are hiding. David’s men interpret the situation as an opportunity granted by God to eliminate their enemy, but David refuses to kill the Lord’s anointed. Merely cutting the edge of Saul’s robe later troubles him. The episode establishes a fundamental distinction between having an opportunity for power and having moral authorization to use it. David chooses not to violently accelerate the fulfillment of the promise.
