Verse 9 is found in chapter 28 of 1 Samuel. Saul seeks a woman who practices divination at Endor, although he had previously removed such practitioners from the land. His contradiction reveals the king’s desperation: what he had forbidden while exercising authority now becomes the resource he secretly uses. Samuel’s appearance within the narrative produces an extraordinary scene of judgment. Saul receives an answer, but not the guidance he desires: the message confirms that his defeat and death are approaching.
