And David said unto Achish, But what have I done? and what hast thou found in thy servant so long as I have been with thee unto this day, that I may not go fight against the enemies of my lord the king?

Verse 8 is found in chapter 29 of 1 Samuel. Achish tells David that he must return. David expresses surprise and claims his willingness to fight, although the reader knows the complexity of his position. Finally, David and his men depart at dawn. The chapter again shows that David’s path toward the throne develops through doors that open and close without him fully controlling events. His separation from the Philistine army directly prepares the crisis at Ziklag.
