Verse 20 is found in chapter 4 of 1 Samuel. The death of Phinehas’s wife during childbirth culminates the tragedy with the name she gives her son: Ichabod, associated with the departure of Israel’s glory. For her, the loss of the ark represents a national catastrophe even greater than the deaths of her husband and father-in-law. The episode expresses the perception that Israel has suffered spiritual humiliation. At the same time, it prepares the next narrative movement, where the ark will demonstrate that God has not lost his power even though Israel has been defeated.
