Verse 9 is found in chapter 5 of 1 Samuel. The hand of the Lord becomes heavy upon the Philistine cities through affliction and disorder. The inhabitants realize that the ark’s presence cannot be treated as mere war booty and begin seeking a way to return it. The episode develops a central irony: Israel brought the ark into battle hoping to obtain power through it, while the Philistines discover that even a defeated nation possesses a God whose presence demands reverence. The Lord’s power is demonstrated without Israel having to intervene.
