Verse 5 is found in chapter 8 of 1 Samuel. Samuel’s old age and the corruption of his sons create a leadership crisis. Israel’s elders request a king to judge the people like the other nations. God interprets the request as a rejection of his rule, although he allows Samuel to listen to the people. The request contains an important tension: Israel needs stable political administration, but seeks to solve the problem by imitating the nations. The text does not present monarchy as inherently illegitimate, but questions the motive and attitude with which Israel requests it.
