And he had a son, whose name was Saul, a choice young man, and a goodly: and there was not among the children of Israel a goodlier person than he: from his shoulders and upward he was higher than any of the people.

Verse 2 is found in chapter 9 of 1 Samuel. Saul initially appears as a young man distinguished by his appearance and family background. The loss of his father’s donkeys leads him, apparently through an ordinary circumstance, toward Samuel. This narrative construction shows how ordinary events can become means through which divine purpose unfolds. Saul does not yet know that he is being led toward a political role. The contrast between what the character knows and what the reader is beginning to understand creates a characteristic biblical narrative irony.
