And he passed through mount Ephraim, and passed through the land of Shalisha, but they found them not: then they passed through the land of Shalim, and there they were not: and he passed through the land of the Benjamites, but they found them not.

Verse 4 is found in chapter 9 of 1 Samuel. Saul initially appears as a young man distinguished by his appearance and family background. The loss of his father’s donkeys leads him, apparently through an ordinary circumstance, toward Samuel. This narrative construction shows how ordinary events can become means through which divine purpose unfolds. Saul does not yet know that he is being led toward a political role. The contrast between what the character knows and what the reader is beginning to understand creates a characteristic biblical narrative irony.
