Verse 12 is found in chapter 1 of 2 Chronicles. God appears to Solomon and allows him to ask for whatever he desires. The king asks for wisdom and knowledge to govern the people instead of asking for wealth, long life, or victory over his enemies. The divine response adds riches and honor. The episode establishes one of the central themes of Chronicles: legitimate government depends on the ability to discern and administer the people according to the will of God.
