Then came Shemaiah the prophet to Rehoboam, and to the princes of Judah, that were gathered together to Jerusalem because of Shishak, and said unto them, Thus saith the LORD, Ye have forsaken me, and therefore have I also left you in the hand of Shishak.

Verse 5 is found in chapter 12 of 2 Chronicles. The prophet Shemaiah interprets the invasion as a consequence of abandoning God. Rehoboam and the leaders humble themselves, and God decides not to destroy them completely. The passage shows a pattern that repeatedly appears in Chronicles: sin, prophetic warning, humility, and partial mercy.
