Now after the time that Amaziah did turn away from following the LORD they made a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem; and he fled to Lachish: but they sent to Lachish after him, and slew him there.

Verse 27 is found in chapter 25 of 2 Chronicles. Amaziah survives Joash by several years but eventually dies as the victim of a conspiracy. The chapter concludes by indicating that his actions were connected with turning away from God. The king’s downfall completes the cycle begun with his reforms and demonstrates the instability of a government that abandoned divine dependence.
