Howbeit from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin, Jehu departed not from after them, to wit, the golden calves that were in Bethel, and that were in Dan.

Verse 29 is found in chapter 10 of 2 Kings. Although Jehu eliminates Baal worship, he continues the sins of Jeroboam, especially the worship of the calves at Bethel and Dan. The narrator acknowledges that Jehu executed judgment against Ahab’s house, but does not present him as completely faithful. This evaluation is important because it prevents a simplistic identification between one correct action and a wholly obedient life. God can use a ruler to accomplish a specific task without approving all his practices. Hazael’s pressure and Israel’s territorial losses also show that the kingdom remains under discipline.
