And Judah was put to the worse before Israel; and they fled every man to their tents.

Verse 12 is found in chapter 14 of 2 Kings. Amaziah challenges Joash of Israel, using language of pride and provocation that Joash answers with a parable about the thistle and the cedar. Amaziah persists, and the two kings confront one another. Judah is defeated, and Jerusalem suffers political humiliation with part of the wall demolished and treasures plundered. The episode shows the danger of interpreting a previous victory as a guarantee of permanent superiority. The narrative also uses irony: a simple parable had warned about Amaziah’s limits, but his ambition led him to ignore it.
