And they rejected his statutes, and his covenant that he made with their fathers, and his testimonies which he testified against them; and they followed vanity, and became vain, and went after the heathen that were round about them, concerning whom the LORD had charged them, that they should not do like them.

Verse 15 is found in chapter 17 of 2 Kings. The narrator interrupts the political sequence to explain why Israel went into exile. He lists the rejection of the Lord, idolatry, the construction of worship sites, imitation of the nations, and refusal to listen to the prophets. The fall of Samaria is thus presented as a theological event before being merely military. God had repeatedly warned the people through his prophets, but Israel persisted in its practices. Exile is interpreted as the accumulated consequence of a prolonged breach of the covenant.

dazu verachteten sie seine Gebote und seinen Bund, den er mit ihren Vätern gemacht hatte, und seine Zeugnisse, die er unter ihnen tat, und wandelten ihrer Eitelkeit nach und wurden eitel den Heiden nach, die um sie her wohnten, von welchen ihnen der HERR geboten hatte, sie sollten nicht wie sie tun;
ed aveano sprezzati i suoi statuti, e il suo patto, il quale egli avea contratto coi lor padri; e le protestazioni ch’egli avea fatte a loro stessi; ed erano camminati dietro alla vanità, onde si erano invaniti; e dietro alle genti ch’erano d’intorno a loro, delle quali il Signore avea lor comandato, che non facessero come esse;
