Verse 5 is found in chapter 17 of 2 Kings. Hoshea becomes the last king of Israel. After conspiring against Assyrian power, he stops paying tribute and seeks support from Egypt. Shalmaneser responds by invading the kingdom, besieging Samaria, and eventually capturing the city. The deportation marks the political end of the northern kingdom. The account is deliberately restrained: after centuries of history, the fall of Samaria is described as the result of a chain of political decisions and, in the chapter’s interpretation, as the outcome of a long history of unfaithfulness.
