Hearken not to Hezekiah: for thus saith the king of Assyria, Make an agreement with me by a present, and come out to me, and then eat ye every man of his own vine, and every one of his fig tree, and drink ye every one the waters of his cistern:

Verse 31 is found in chapter 18 of 2 Kings. Judah’s officials ask the Rabshakeh to speak in Aramaic so the people will not understand his speech, but he insists on speaking in Hebrew. His purpose is precisely to influence the population. The people remain silent because Hezekiah had ordered them not to answer. The chapter ends with the messengers tearing their clothes and bringing the report to the king. The crisis reaches the heart of Jerusalem. Hezekiah’s response and the prophetic intervention in the next chapter will show that the confrontation will not be resolved solely through political negotiation.

No oigáis a Ezechîas, porque así dice el rey de Asiria: Haced conmigo paz, y salid a mí, y cada uno comerá de su vid, y de su higuera, y cada uno beberá las aguas de su pozo;
Non ascoltate Ezechia; perciocchè il re degli Assiri ha detto così: Fate pace meco, ed uscite a me; e ciascun di voi mangi della sua vite, e del suo fico, e beva dell’acqua della sua cisterna;
Não deis ouvidos a Ezequias; porque assim diz o rei da Assíria: Contratai comigo por presentes, e saí a mim, e coma cada um da sua vide e da sua figueira, e beba cada um a água da sua cisterna;
