Verse 22 is found in chapter 21 of 2 Kings. Amon succeeds Manasseh and continues his religious practices. His own servants conspire against him and assassinate him, but the people kill the conspirators and place Josiah on the throne. The rapid succession again shows the political instability accompanying unfaithfulness. At the same time, the people preserve the dynastic line. The episode prepares Josiah’s arrival, whose reform will represent one of the final great opportunities for religious renewal before Jerusalem’s definitive judgment.
