Behold therefore, I will gather thee unto thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered into thy grave in peace; and thine eyes shall not see all the evil which I will bring upon this place. And they brought the king word again.

Verse 20 is found in chapter 22 of 2 Kings. Huldah the prophetess announces that the judgment against Jerusalem will certainly come because of the people’s unfaithfulness. Yet God distinguishes Josiah’s personal response: because of his humility and repentance, he will not personally witness the announced disaster. This section prevents the reform from being presented as automatically capable of canceling all accumulated judgment. God’s word remains serious, while also recognizing the individual’s humble response. Josiah therefore receives an urgent mission: to act faithfully during the remaining time before the announced judgment arrives.

Darum will ich dich zu deinen Vätern sammeln, daß du mit Frieden in dein Grab versammelt werdest und deine Augen nicht sehen all das Unglück, das ich über diese Stätte bringen will.
