And the altars that were on the top of the upper chamber of Ahaz, which the kings of Judah had made, and the altars which Manasseh had made in the two courts of the house of the LORD, did the king beat down, and brake them down from thence, and cast the dust of them into the brook Kidron.

Verse 12 is found in chapter 23 of 2 Kings. Josiah undertakes an extensive purge of idolatrous worship. He removes objects dedicated to Baal and Asherah, eliminates illegitimate priests, desecrates worship sites, and destroys the altar at Bethel associated with Jeroboam’s sin. He also confronts practices involving child sacrifice and other forms of worship introduced into Judah. The reform has an exceptional geographic and religious scope. The objective is not simply to improve existing worship, but to remove structures the narrator considers incompatible with exclusive worship of the Lord. The destruction of Bethel directly connects Josiah’s reform with the ancient history of the northern kingdom.
