Verse 25 is found in chapter 23 of 2 Kings. Josiah orders the celebration of Passover according to what is written in the Book of the Law. The celebration is extraordinary because the narrator presents it as an especially significant Passover since ancient times. Josiah’s general faithfulness is then summarized, followed by his death in battle against Pharaoh Neco. The king’s death demonstrates that even a reforming monarch remains subject to human frailty and the complexity of international politics. His reform was profound, but it could not ultimately stop the judgment that had been announced.
