Jehoahaz was twenty and three years old when he began to reign; and he reigned three months in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Hamutal, the daughter of Jeremiah of Libnah.

Verse 31 is found in chapter 23 of 2 Kings. Jehoahaz reigns briefly and is taken to Egypt by Pharaoh Neco. Jehoiakim is then placed on the throne and becomes subject to Egyptian tribute. Both kings receive negative evaluations. The contrast with Josiah is immediate: after the reformer’s death, Judah quickly enters a period of international dependence and spiritual decline. The succession demonstrates the fragility of a reform when it fails to permanently transform the orientation of the entire society. Foreign policy also changes rapidly, preparing the future confrontation between Egypt and Babylon.
