For through the anger of the LORD it came to pass in Jerusalem and Judah, until he had cast them out from his presence, that Zedekiah rebelled against the king of Babylon.

Verse 20 is found in chapter 24 of 2 Kings. Nebuchadnezzar appoints Zedekiah as king, but he eventually rebels against Babylon. The narrator again states that he did evil in the sight of the Lord. The political rebellion is presented within a context of continuing unfaithfulness. Jerusalem’s fall no longer appears unexpected: it is the culmination of a chain of warnings and decisions. The chapter ends by preparing the final siege. Judah still retains a royal structure, but its independence is increasingly apparent only in name, and its judgment is about to be completed.
