And it came to pass in the seven and thirtieth year of the captivity of Jehoiachin king of Judah, in the twelfth month, on the seven and twentieth day of the month, that Evilmerodach king of Babylon in the year that he began to reign did lift up the head of Jehoiachin king of Judah out of prison;
A verse can bring hope. Share this message of faith with someone you care about.
Verse 27 is found in chapter 25 of 2 Kings. The book ends with an unexpectedly hopeful change: Evil-merodach releases Jehoiachin from prison and grants him a privileged place at the king of Babylon’s table. Jehoiachin receives new clothing and a permanent allowance. Although Jerusalem has been destroyed and the monarchy appears finished, Judah’s royal line does not completely disappear from the narrative horizon. The ending does not resolve the exile, but leaves open a possibility of restoration. The release of a descendant of David introduces a note of hope after the devastation and prevents the book from ending solely with an image of definitive defeat.
