And they beat down the cities, and on every good piece of land cast every man his stone, and filled it; and they stopped all the wells of water, and felled all the good trees: only in Kirharaseth left they the stones thereof; howbeit the slingers went about it, and smote it.

Verse 25 is found in chapter 3 of 2 Kings. The Moabites interpret the reflection of the water as blood and believe that the allied armies have destroyed one another. Their mistake produces a military response that ends in defeat. The campaign concludes with the devastation of Moabite territory and the desperate sacrifice of the king of Moab’s son. The scene is difficult and deliberately somber: warfare has reached a point of extreme religious and political violence. The account does not present human sacrifice as a practice approved by God, but as part of the moral darkness of the conflict. The campaign confirms Elisha’s prophecy while also leaving an image of the destructive consequences of war.
