Verse 2 is found in chapter 4 of 2 Kings. A widow of one of the sons of the prophets faces debt and the threat of losing her children as slaves. Elisha does not respond with an abstract teaching, but with a concrete solution based on the small amount of oil she possesses. The miracle occurs as the woman acts according to the instruction she receives: she gathers containers, shuts the door, and begins filling the vessels. The account shows divine concern for economically vulnerable people and presents provision as an act that uses what is already in the needy person’s hands. The oil stops only when no more vessels are available.
