And when the servant of the man of God was risen early, and gone forth, behold, an host compassed the city both with horses and chariots. And his servant said unto him, Alas, my master! how shall we do?

Verse 15 is found in chapter 6 of 2 Kings. The Syrian army surrounds Dothan to capture Elisha, and the prophet’s servant becomes afraid. Elisha prays for his eyes to be opened, and the servant sees the mountain full of horses and chariots of fire. Elisha then asks that the enemies be temporarily confused and leads them to Samaria. Instead of allowing a massacre, he orders that they be fed and sent back. The episode develops two related themes: the reality of invisible divine protection and the possibility of responding to an enemy with mercy rather than immediate vengeance.
