And the princes of the children of Ammon said unto Hanun their lord, Thinkest thou that David doth honour thy father, that he hath sent comforters unto thee? hath not David rather sent his servants unto thee, to search the city, and to spy it out, and to overthrow it?

Verse 3 is found in chapter 10 of 2 Samuel. David attempts to show kindness to Hanun after his father’s death, but the Ammonite advisers interpret the Israelite messengers as spies and publicly humiliate them. The episode shows how a peace initiative can be transformed into conflict through suspicion and misunderstanding. David responds by protecting the dignity of his envoys and waits for the humiliation to pass before they return to Jerusalem.
