Then David arose from the earth, and washed, and anointed himself, and changed his apparel, and came into the house of the LORD, and worshipped: then he came to his own house; and when he required, they set bread before him, and he did eat.

Verse 20 is found in chapter 12 of 2 Samuel. The son born to Bathsheba becomes gravely ill. David fasts, lies on the ground, and pleads for his life, but after the child dies he changes his behavior and explains that he cannot bring him back. The scene expresses a father’s grief and, at the same time, acceptance of divine sovereignty. The child’s death is not presented as a simple formula explaining all suffering, but as part of the specific consequence announced by Nathan within the narrative.

Allora Davide si levò di terra, e si lavò, e s’unse, e mutò i suoi vestimenti, ed entrò nella Casa del Signore, e adorò; poi venne in casa sua, e chiese che gli fosse messa la tavola con le vivande, e mangiò.
