Wherefore hast thou despised the commandment of the LORD, to do evil in his sight? thou hast killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and hast taken his wife to be thy wife, and hast slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon.

Verse 9 is found in chapter 12 of 2 Samuel. Nathan explains the consequences of David’s sin: although God had given him abundance and authority, David took Uriah’s wife and caused his death. The announced judgment affects the king’s own household and shows that the ruler’s private sin will have public consequences. David acknowledges his sin, but forgiveness does not mean the absence of historical consequences. The text holds two truths together: God can forgive the repentant sinner while also disciplining the consequences of his actions.
